Island Pride Magazine
12th February, 2004
By Christine Skeete
Island
Pride magazine,
published by the Community Tourism
Foundation (CTF),
pays tribute to the heritage, talent and unique
characteristics that define Barbadians. It showcases
accomplishments and features, which we can all be proud to
share with visitors to the island.
Some of
Barbados’ best-kept secrets are revealed as the first issue of
Island Pride highlights often-overlooked events and places of
cultural, historical and environmental interest, as well as Bajan delicacies and gifted up and coming artists.
Le Carenage
Restaurant & Arts Club, culinary entrepreneur Marion Hart,
fine artist Romell Yearwood, and feng shui practitioner and
textile designer Glenn Brathwaite are among those featured in
the 2004 edition.
Articles on
tourism companies that are making a difference in the
community provide models for other businesses. The featured
companies have recognised the significance of the
contributions made by both their employees and ordinary
citizens to the success of the tourism industry. Community
activities by Bougainvillea and Sand Acres Resorts, the
Fairmont Royal Pavilion and Glitter Bay Hotels, Coconut Court
Beach Resort, the Barbados Pavilion and Casuarina Beach Club
are all examined in Island Pride. Casuarina Beach Club was
also the recipient of the Community Tourism
Foundation-sponsored award for Socially Responsible Tourism
Company of the Year at the 2003 Minister of Tourism Awards.
Advertising
in Island Pride is more than a marketing opportunity. It
allows supporting companies to demonstrate their commitment to
social development. By joining with the
CTF to produce this
publication, these businesses acknowledge the importance of
presenting our people and our heritage to visitors.
The
Barbados Tourism Authority is assisting with both local and
overseas distribution of Island Pride. The magazine is also
available free of cost at hotels, duty-free stores and tourist
attractions around the island.
This
publication is expected to expand to the point where it can
help support community-based initiatives. To date, through
funding from the Inter-American Foundation, the Community
Tourism Foundation has awarded grants in Barbados to the
Caribbean Youth Environment Network to implement an
agro-tourism project and to the Home Village Foundation to
develop their “Bajan Village” in Ellerton, St. George.
Additional financing is essential for these and other emerging
projects to be sustainable.
The
magazine’s concept was developed in part by the
CTF’s
Fundraising Committee comprised of Karen Alleyne of Super
Centre, Brenda Edwards formerly of the Barbados Tourism
Authority, May Hinds of May Hinds Consulting, Richard Jones,
Executive Trustee of the CTF, Susan Mahon of Counterpart
Caribbean and Leesa Parris of US Airways.
Founded in
December 2000, the Community Tourism Foundation is a
charitable organisation that partners with the tourism sector
to improve communities through the application of
self-development, enterprise and educational projects that
enhance the skills and knowledge of underprivileged
individuals.
The
CTF
functions to mobilise resources from the tourism industry to
invest in communities and disadvantaged groups. It aims to
stimulate the participation of the tourism sector in community
development by providing an appropriate and visible structure
through which social investments can have the greatest
possible impact.

Trident magazine, January - March 2004 issue)
